Josie is an award-winning journalist, writer, and Harvard Law graduate whose work focuses on prosecutors, prisons, and the systemic inequities of the American criminal justice system. Her reporting and commentary have been featured in premier publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, and Slate. Beyond print, she has contributed to scripted television as a writer for the FX series The Premise.

A powerhouse in the audio space, Josie was the host, co-writer, and co-executive producer of the Peabody-nominated podcast Unreformed: The Story of the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children. The series was named one of the best podcasts of 2023 by both The New Yorker and New York Magazine, earning an Ambie for Best History Podcast and a “People’s Choice” Webby for Best Podcast Writing. Her extensive audio portfolio also includes hosting Corruption Uncovered for Team Roc, developing The 30 Year Project with the Vera Institute of Justice, and co-hosting Crooked Media’s daily news podcast, What a Day. She also created and co-hosted three seasons of the acclaimed series Justice in America alongside Clint Smith.

Her leadership in the field includes serving as the President of The Appeal until 2021, where she oversaw original journalism centered on the justice system. She is currently a contributing editor at Balls and Strikes and a Senior Fellow at Type Media. Throughout her career, she has held prestigious fellowships with New America and the USC Annenberg Innovation Lab, and she continues to advise organizers and news outlets on narrative strategy and effective communication.
